Campus Life Hurricane Highlights Mercedes Côté is the winner of the $500 Fondation Desjardins bursary for Cégep Heritage College.
A defense player on the womens' Gatineau Intrépides hockey team in the Ligue de hockey d'excellence du Québec, Mercedes Côté is a student-athlete who stands out for several reasons. Chief among them is the fact that she became the first First Nations player to be named captain of a team in the circuit.
The recipient of a scholarship from the Indigenous community of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg wants to inspire young girls from her home region. In fact, she received the Sportsmanship of the Year award at last year's Aboriginal National Championships women's tournament.
Moving away from her community to study humanities at CÉGEP Heritage College was an important step for the hockey player. Mercedes, who is pursuing studies in humanities, is known for her dedication to academics, and for taking the time to consult with her teachers and staff members in order to make progress in her academic career, while remaining fully committed to her sport.
Congratulations to Mercedes Côté !
