Saturday 1pm to 4pm
April 11, 18, 25 and May 2 & 9, 2026
This 15-hour course offered over five consecutive Saturdays introduces participants to the practical aspects of growing food and flowers in a backyard or community garden.
You will learn the basic concepts required to plan and start a garden and engage in hands-on activities at the Heritage College garden and home/community gardens in the area. The course aims to be empowering, engaging and fun, with a focus on learning practical skills in a healthy, collaborative environment. Each class will cover some theory and planning, with at least 1.5 h devoted to hands-on greenhouse and garden work. The course facilitator will use professional crop planning resources and tools, reflecting the seasonal rhythms and techniques of a small-scale organic farm. The seedlings and plants produced will be maintained in collaboration with Heritage staff and students.
Participants will finish the course with a collection of garden-ready seedlings and will carry forward with a solid grasp of the skills needed to create a flourishing home garden. Surplus seedlings will be donated to the Heritage garden or to local community gardens or food banks.
