Synopsis: Widely regarded as one of the most influential plays of the 20th century, Italian playwright, poet, and novelist Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author is a classic work of the theatre of the absurd. The play tells the tale of six fictional – but living and breathing – members of one family whose author has failed to complete their story. Compelled to continue with the rest of their tale, these characters barge in on the rehearsal of a theater company and demand that their suffering be played on the stage. Thinking it an interesting theatrical experiment, the director consents, but he soon regrets his decision. The characters’ rebellion against their creator leads them to attack the foundations of the play, ignoring all stage directions and the pleas of the manager. As their tale moves towards its inevitable and tragic conclusion, the interactions between the characters and the actors reveal the limits of the theatrical conventions and pose questions about the meaning of reality. |
