NewMedia Publication and Design

NewMedia and Publication Design at Heritage College is an exciting program that concentrates on providing students with technical and communication skills to create, write, and graphically illustrate a variety of publications, multimedia presentations, and web documents.

Students learn to manage print and electronic publication projects, interact effectively with clients, provide software support, and ensure the quality of written language. The program emphasizes integrated concepts and skills, the development of independent thinking and creativity, and the production of sophisticated publications. NewMedia Publication and Design offers first and second-year co-op placements in the areas of print and web design.

Student Skills and Competencies

Skills of first year students:

  • Apply design principles and colour theory to creating images for the web and print
  • Create thumbnails, roughs and comps for printed materials
  • Format professional business documents using MS Word
  • Design, create, and maintain basic web sites with a common look and feel using HTML5 and CSS3
  • Create both static and interactive images in Photoshop and Illustrator for use in print and on web sites
  • Use PowerPoint to create well-designed presentations
  • Build spreadsheets with formulas, functions, and charts using MS Excel

Additional skills of second year students:

  • Design book jackets, posters, calendars, brochures, packaging design, and other promotional materials using InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Use more advanced features of Photoshop to create and modify digital illustrations for integration into printed business documents
  • Work with advanced CSS to control the layout and design of web sites in Dreamweaver
  • Use the different animation principles and techniques in Flash
  • Design and format print and electronic forms and training manuals using Word and Acrobat
