Helen Smyth Memorial Co-op Student of the Year Award
for a 1st and 2nd Co-op

Did you have an exceptional 1st and/or 2nd co-op work term placement? Would you like to be recognized for your accomplishments, contributions, and what you have learned while on co-op? If yes, the Helen Smyth Memorial Co-op Student of the Year Award is for you!

About Helen Smyth
Helen Smyth, a professor at Heritage for 20 years, dedicated herself to nurturing and developing her students’ professional and technical skills to prepare them for the workplace. The Smyth family has graciously agreed to fund the award in memory of her commitment to student success.

The recipients of the award will receive a bursary of $100 each. You can nominate yourself or someone else can nominate you (fellow student, co-op employer or Heritage staff).

Application and Selection Criteria

To be considered, your application must include the following documents, and will be scored as follows:

  • Personal statement that explains (15 pts.):
    • why you should receive the award;
    • the highlight(s) of your co-op, your contributions and accomplishments; and
    • what you have learned from your co-op experience.
    (minimum 300 words, maximum 500 words)

  • Supporting statement from your employer that (15 pts.):
    • qualifies your contributions in the workplace;
    • demonstrates how you performed above and beyond the expectations and job description; and
    • provides examples of your work ethics.
    (maximum 500 words)

  • Your co-op performance evaluation (10 pts.)
  • Academic achievements (minimum 70% average overall) (5 pts.)

The application deadline for submitting your personal and supporting statements to the Co-op Coordinator is the first Friday of September after your co-op.

The selection committee will be comprised of the Co-op Coordinator, the Associate Academic Dean and an Education Advisor from Student Services. The recipients of the award must agree to allow Cégep Heritage College to use their name, application profile, and photograph for publication and promotional purposes.
