Program Overview

The Visual Arts program is designed to cultivate imaginative and problem-solving skills. Students develop their creativity and artistic personality through courses and hands-on studio work in drawing, sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography, multi-media and graphic design. They also work with computer-generated images to achieve their artistic goals using current software. Students develop through activities such as live model sessions, video presentations, guest lecturers and visits to galleries and museums. Students also have the opportunity to show their work in the department's yearly public exhibition.

Educational Path and Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Visual Arts program will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a professional work ethic, time and project management skills required to continue studying within their chosen field;
  • Synthesize the underlying principles, elements and techniques of Visual Arts
  • Constructively evaluate their own work and works of others using language appropriate to the Visual Arts;
  • Interpret and analyze the major movements and development of the Visual Arts throughout history;
  • Create independent works of art that show a knowledge of all of the above.

Career / Study Opportunities

Armed with a diploma in Visual Arts and their portfolios graduates have many opportunities to pursue future studies in fine arts, graphic design, fashion, video, animation, computer art, cartooning, film production, illustration, painting, sculpture, photography, art history, gallery and museum work, typography, theatre set and costume design, education, art therapy, community programming, interior design, architecture and advertising.
