Course Descriptions

English: Business Communication
This course develops effective written and oral communication skills in a variety of event situations. Topics include business grammar and etiquette, accurately conveying information and instructions and delivering oral presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint. Students will also learn how to interact with different stakeholders, vendors, partners and associates within the event industry.

Introduction to Events and Conference Planning
This course is specifically aimed at understanding and defining the art and science of event management within the tourism industry as well as the public and private sectors. Topics  include the many working functions and characteristics, its association and designations related to this type of employment. As well, it will take a good look at how each fits into the many daily duties and responsablities of event and conference planning. This course will also serve to identify the various types of events and conferences, who the intended audience is, when & where the event conference is held and why it is being held.

Business Tourism Law
This course concentrates on the legal structure which regulates our society and the various laws which apply to the operation of an event within the tourism industry. An examination of some of the legal concepts includes contracts, business torts, agency, partnerships, corporations, property, insurance, contracts and insolvency. In conclusion, this course will take a good look at legal terminology related to the overall administration duties in organizing an event and conference.

Commercialization of Tourism Products and Services
Upon completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills in selling products and services within the tourism industry that are specifically aimed toward events and conference planning. They will learn the processes and procedures related to market research & analysis, determining & targeting potential clients, creating & proposing sales action plans and implementing sales strategies.  Other topics will be on giving a public & professional sale presentation, sales tactics and incorporating their respective tools and finally, ensuring proper follow-up plans with regards to selling these products and services.

Accounting for Events and Conferences                                      
Upon completion of the course, students will have an understanding of the provision of accounting support related to events and conferences.
Topics include:  account definitions/groupings (discuss concepts of account definitions and groupings e.g., assets liabilities, etc); debits and credits; account balances (concepts of net change and balances and how transactions affect account balances); double entry method accounting; flows of information (journal entries, cut-off procedures and adjustments); financial and management reports (balance sheet, income statements and general ledgers)

Program Planning and Registration 
Program planning and registration are two key elements that go hand in hand when organizing en event and conference.  This course will provide students with a clear understanding on the steps and tools needed in incorporating an event program. Students will also understand the registration process corresponding to the needs of this program while respecting the goals and objectives of the event or conference. As well, students will learn how to properly set up an effective on site registration and customer service booth to properly welcome delegates.

Events and Conference  Management
This course focuses on the many skills and behaviors necessary in clearly understanding the many types of events and conferences being organized while interfacing with numerous dealers. Topics include comprehending the steps to researching preliminary information, detailing an event and conference strategic plan, executing logistical needs and successfully managing on site activities as well as checklists. Finally, this course provides the students with tools to properly evaluate and complete a follow-up report on results pertaining to the event or conference organized.  

Customer Service and Event Professionalism
This course develops the event and conference coordinator to use different techniques and tools in greeting and interfacing in a professional matter with delegates, senior executives and high profile personalities while respecting Canadian Protocol Standards. Upon completion of this course, students will know how to manage requests and complaints as well as the steps in properly answering client needs. Students will also be able to assess verbal and physical communication and demonstrate professionalism during stressful situations event or conference planning may present.     

Marketing and Media Relations
Upon completion of this course, students will have a clear understanding of the importance and value of integrating effective marketing and advertising goals and its strategies in order to properly promote the event or conference. As well, students will learn how to implement these strategies while incorporating strong and professional media relations. Topics include developing and utilizing promotional tools, marketing events and conferences, communication needs, media relations and press conferences/ launches.

Human Resources and Volunteer Management
Upon completion of this course, students will have the skills, practical knowledge and tools to recruit, select candidates, train & develop, supervise, complete performance appraisals and determine compensation for employees as well as volunteers. Students will also acquire knowledge on how to develop good judgment when facing a wide range of human resource issues during the planning and organizing of an event and conference. 

Français des affaires I
Ce cours permet à l’apprenant d’acquérir des connaissances de français langue seconde et vise à rendre l’apprenant capable de communiquer en français, dans un langage relié au milieu du congrès et de l’événement avec une certaine aisance à l’oral et à l’écrit. L’apprenant devra appliquer les notions grammaticales à la communication en français courant.

This course allows the student to acquire French second language skills. Its main objective is to enable the student to sustain short communication exchanges in written or oral form within a context related to conferences and events. The student learns to use French grammar.

Français des affaires II
Un cours qui vise à développer la communication écrite et orale chez l’élève, en mettant l’accent sur les éléments essentiels de la compréhension et de l’expression écrite. L'accent sera mis sur la technique de composition et la production de textes ainsi que la rédaction des documents administratifs qui est approprié de la terminologie du tourisme, du congrès et de l’événement.

The objective of this course is to develop oral and written communication skills by focusing on essential elements of speech and written form. Practical exercises will focus on written communication and text production. Topics include: a review of the past tense, a study of the imperfect tense, and oral and written practice of adjectives, direct object pronouns, relative pronouns as well as writing and editing administrative documents using terminology within the tourism, conference and event industry.

MS Office I for Events
Students learn various computer concepts and how to use applications and operating systems features in an integrated approach within the business process. Students learn how to carry out computer related tasks commonly performed in an event or conference environment such as managing a computerized workstation, selecting a software application, producing various documents, communicating with MS Outlook, and using a network.

MS Office II for Events 
This course expands students' knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Word and explores relational database concepts. Students will learn how to organize and customize Microsoft Outlook and use the advanced scheduling features of the program.  Using Microsoft Word, students will create and format complex documents.  Students will use Microsoft Access and Excel to create a database and will insert and modify tables, forms, queries and reports. Finally, Students will learn how to create a professional presentation on Power Point.

Career Planning and Integration to the Work place
This work term immerses the student in a workplace environment for a period of up to a maximum of 10 weeks (12 hrs per week).  It will be conducted in an organization outside the school. Students will continue to learn and to use their newly acquired skills within the parameters of the host organization’s needs. It is a mandatory course in order to graduate from this co-op program.  A 12 hours preparation course will be given prior to this work term.
